Kettlebells

I have always thought about doing a kettlebell class. They actually look fun interesting. I hear a lot of people talking about then as being a great exercise to do. So I wanted to check into this further and find out what exactly kettlebells are.Kettlebells

What are kettlebells?

They are of Russian origin. The original kettlebells were cast iron balls with handles. They were used in sports such as kettlebell lifting. The kettlebells, that we have been introduced to in this country, have the same look but a different construction. They are weighted in different poundage with an easy-to-grip handle. More and more people have come to use the kettlebells as a total body fitness instrument.

When used properly, the kettlebell works the heart, lungs and the muscles. There are a variety of movements used. The most basic is the kettlebell swing. With one or two hands on the handle, the kettlebell is swung from between the legs up to about head height. I found this great You Tube video that shows some basic moves.

The one thing I like about the kettlebell workout is that it’s 1 piece of equipment to work the entire body. Granted you will need different weight sizes as your body get stronger but you don’t have to travel from machine to machine at the gym to get a workout. It’s great for the busy mom/dad that only has 30 min. If you have a strong routine you can get a great kettlebell workout.

If you are looking for a way to get your exercise in each day, try kettlebells. They are an all-purpose piece of exercise equipment that can fit into almost any busy person’s schedule. Do a routine in about 30 min and get back to spending time with your family.

  1. Hey Woman! Do you have a kettlebell? I have been thinking about getting one. My main problem is that I don’t know what weight to get to maximize it’s use and adapt as I gain strength. Any thoughts?

  2. Kristen if you lift weights I would use what you normally us. Starting low is a good idea.

Cherrie I have only used them at the gym a time or two and have found them challenging. I would love to find a class to try for beginners. I hear people talk about it and it’s a good workout.

  3. I’m actually looking into that myself. Planning to try it once I get done with the 30 Day Shred which is now turning to be a 60 day Shred, lol! Are you doing the Kettlebells? How are you liking it?
