How Do Natural Energy Drinks Work

Most people notice that they go through an after-lunch slump. Even if you were totally energized all morning, once the late afternoon hits, you could probably use a nap. To keep the day from dragging, many people reach for a caffeine laden energy drink to keep them going. But is this really the best idea?

Most energy drinks are loaded with sugar, caffeine, and artificial substances.

Many even carry warnings that tell children and pregnant women that the product may be dangerous. Regardless of what advertisers would like you to believe, their energy drinks are not healthy, even if they promise to give you a supply of vitamins and minerals. The ridiculous amounts of sugar, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, dyes, and other artificial substances that these products contain completely outweigh any nutritional benefit that the drink may provide.

If you want a healthy source of energy, you will need to turn to natural energy drinks.

Fresh fruit and vegetable juices, organic teas, low fat milk, protein drinks, fruit smoothies, and fiber fortified drinks are the real energy drinks. These drinks will provide you with the right balance of nutrition to re-energize your body and help you overcome the mid-day slump.

So How Do Natural Energy Drinks Give You Energy?

Natural drinks supply the body with energy a few different ways. Fresh fruit and vegetable juices supply the body with a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This will help to maintain your energy levels naturally, instead of overstimulating yourself with caffeine. This is also beneficial since natural juices will not lead to a “crash.” Most energy drinks will give you a quick boost of energy that will eventually leave you more fatigued. Natural juices will help you maintain your energy throughout the day.

One reason to consume fresh fruits and vegetables in juice form, instead of whole, is because your body will actually process the nutrients faster. Juice is also easier for your body to digest, which will help you avoid that tired feeling you get after eating a big meal. When choosing juices, there is just one thing to keep in mind. Fruit does contain fructose, which will cause your insulin levels to rise. If you want to keep your energy levels balanced, you will want to stick mostly with vegetable juices. Of course, fresh fruit juice can be added for taste.

If you are more of a smoothie or protein drink person, these drinks will also give you energy.

However, it is important to avoid smoothies that contain added sugar or whipped cream. To keep your smoothie healthy and natural, stick to fruits, skim milk, low-fat plain yogurt, and/or protein powder. If you need a quick pick-me-up, protein shakes are a good choice that will give your muscles the protein they need to rebuild themselves. Of course, when choosing protein shakes, it is important to stay away from formulas that contain lots of added sugar. Smoothies are a great way to start get energy and a healthy breakfast.

Do Natural Energy Drinks Really Give You Energy?

Natural drinks really will give you energy. No, they will not give you that jittery, mile-a-minute feeling that many sugary energy drinks will. What they will do is provide you with balanced, healthy energy. Just because you don’t feel like you have tons of extra energy doesn’t mean that natural choices don’t work. When consuming fresh juices, smoothies, protein, and fiber drinks, your energy levels will remain balanced. You’ll notice the extra energy when you aren’t wishing for an afternoon nap time.

If need a bigger boost, drink a cup of organic green tea or a small cup of black coffee.

This will give you a decent amount of caffeine, without overloading your system. If you do go this route, make sure to drink a glass of water or fresh juice as well. Caffeine will dehydrate you if you aren’t careful. If such a small amount of caffeine could dehydrate you, just image what a traditional energy drink would do.

  1. Karla,

Thanks so much for your thoughtful post. I agree with your thoughts on energy drinks. We just have to be conscious of what we put in our bodies and that means we just have to check and recheck the labels. And if we are able, then we are always going to be better served if we can create our own juice concoctions.
