Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is at a level where it is out of control. Who’s to blame isn’t important right now. What is important is that you know and understand what childhood obesity is, and the effect it is having on your child. Here are some startling childhood obesity facts.

The most startling fact is the number of obese children has doubled in the past 30 years. With the invention of technology and video games, children and teens have less motivation and desire to get outside the house.

Diet is a huge factor in overweight children as well. The fact is, we no longer feed our kids healthy meals. In our society, both mom and dad usually have to work in order to survive. This leaves the children to fend for themselves. What’s the easiest thing for them to fix? Things like cereals, chips, candy, hot dogs are all common foods of our children.

With the alarming number of children becoming obese, there also an alarming number of children developing diseases. The diseases include:

  • Type-2 Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High levels of cholesterol
  • Liver disease
  • and sleep apnea

Thirty years ago, it was unheard of for children to high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Now, it is just a fact that many parents live with. Think about it. Kids are having to take blood pressure medications at adolescence.

Aside from the medical conditions associated with childhood obesity are the social factors. Overweight kids have problems fitting in with other kids.

Think about it. With healthy kids running around the playground, overweight kids cant keep up. Instead, they lag behind or sit out altogether. Because of this, it is common to see these kids develop low self esteem.

A kid who feels left out from the crowd, might distance himself from people. Doing this can cause them to take longer to develop social skills. This is seen all to often. Obese children mature at a later age, because the do not have the social interaction of the other kids.

Childhood obesity isn’t a disease that just effects the children. Most overweight children retain their weight through adulthood. This just compounds the severity of obesity related illnesses.

Kids who are obese have the world against them. They need help. They need your help. The problem isn’t going away, and it must be addressed. Don’t put this off any longer. Get help for your children now.

  1. Things are really getting out of hand. And they want to take gym out of schools. Kids need to run around more, not less. Me too, for that matter. Thanks for the great post!

  2. The one thing I do for my kids to be healthy is have them eat fresh fruits. I also make soups and have them drink lots of water. They get kind of aggravated with me for asking them if they drank their water yet but I need to be on them so they’ll remember.
We really need to be watching out.
    All the best,

  3. Getting kids to be active and getting them to eat healthy foods requires parents to do the same. It’s a lifestyle change that needs to happen. Parents are the role models, and whatever changes they want to see from their kids has to be seen from them first. Great post, Karla!

  4. I really try to get my son to eat as healthy as possible but let me tell ya, it’s hard to do! So days it’s just easier to stick a frozen pizza in and call it a day. It was hard to be the overweight kid in middle school. They really need to keep gym and consider the food they are serving these kids. Thanks for commenting.

  5. I know those lifelong effect. I have been overweight since Jr. High I know the teasing that is involved and the low self-esteem it causes. I hate seeing children go through that when it’s preventable.
