At the start of the year, we often challenge ourselves with a series of resolutions – and many of them focus on being a little healthier. Whether that means you’re planning to exercise every day or shake up your diet. However,  as time goes on, we begin to slip up more and more often and end up abandoning them all together – usually by the time that March hits.

However, the reason that new year’s resolutions so often end in failure is because we put too much pressure on them or expect to overhaul our lives overnight. This is simply not the way that real change occurs – you have to give it time. The best way to do this is by starting with smaller changes and developing them over time. 

With that in mind, here are some small things you can do every day to take better care of yourself. 

Wake up a little earlier

We’re all guilty of hitting snooze on our alarm from time to time – but the truth is, that extra five minutes usually does not make much of a difference to your mood. In fact, it may leave you feeling more tired than you did beforehand. One way in which you can combat this and help prepare yourself for the day ahead is by starting to get up a little earlier – even if it’s just ten extra minutes. Don’t let yourself rush in the morning – as this means you start out feeling stressed. Ensure you have enough time to get ready and eat breakfast before starting work. 

Spend more time outside

Spending time outside – whether you are walking, cycling or running is great for your mental and physical health. Therefore, you should set aside some time each day to go outside – if only for a few minutes. For example, if you find that you are too busy with work to go for that evening bike ride – take a short walk around the block on your lunch break. 

Pay close attention to your eyesight

While people are often quick to make an appointment to see a doctor when they are struggling, many of us tend to put off a visit to the optometrist as we view it as an extra cost. However, you must take care of your sight – and pay close attention to any sudden changes, such as if you are struggling to see things clearly when up close. If this is the case, make an appointment sooner rather than later. 

Learn to say no

There is a lot of power in saying no. While this does not mean that you have to turn down every opportunity that comes your way, it’s important to understand that you don’t have to agree to every situation presented to you. For example, if your boss is asking you to take on a new project, but you’re already juggling multiple deadlines – you can tell them that you aren’t quite ready for that yet. If you’re having a bad day and want to stay at home, you don’t have to make plans with friends. Learning to say no and letting yourself rest when you need it is a small change that can have a real impact on your life. 

Don’t ignore problems

Sometimes, we ignore any health issues as we think they are insignificant and don’t’ want to cause worry. Other times, we feel like we are too busy to go and get them checked out. However, you must go to visit a doctor as and when you need to. Alternatively, you could also look into an online consultation service – which would allow you to address any concerns you have from the comfort of your own home. 

Stop comparing yourself to others

Society often teaches us to be competitive – or compare ourselves to those around us – and it can be hard to pull away from this mindset. However, it’s important to remember that everybody feels this way from time to time – and people you are envious of may be envious of you, too. Nobody’s life is as good as it looks on social media – and every feed is carefully curated to present the image of a perfect life. Whenever you begin to compare yourself to others – take a step back. Instead of thinking about areas in which you feel you are lacking – make a note of everything you like about yourself or everything you do well. Recognizing your own strengths and accomplishments on a daily basis can have a positive effect on your mental health.

Even the fittest people in the world started somewhere and nobody is born toned, muscular, or super fit. Becoming healthy through beginner fitness is a difficult process that takes time, dedication, and strength of will if you want to carry it through to achieve the best results possible. The demands of the modern world mean that it is very difficult to begin a new routine and work it around the home life and work-life when we have children, a marriage, or a demanding career, but the good news is that just 1 hour a day is enough to achieve meaningful results, so working with your trainer on a schedule is essential.

Even the busiest person can donate 1 hour per day but when to use this hour is an important decision. Most people start an exercise routine either before they go to work or immediately after they finish, but this isn’t possible for everyone. Studies have shown that it is better to exercise in the evening since we typically need less oxygen later in the day than we do in the early hours, therefore the same results can be achieved with less effort.

Being successful requires a lot of hard work and determination but having the ability to stay composed even in the toughest situations is also crucial. This is why you need to make the conscious effort to take some time and breathe, even if it’s through simple activities such as stretching, meditation, etc. To avoid complete burnout, especially in a highly demanding schedule, it’s important to take things one step at a time. 

Taking the time to unwind after a day’s work and giving your mind space to breathe also plays a major role in how successful you are. Being relaxed is a habit that you can gradually build. Give yourself the time to relax and take a break from your busy schedule. You can stand in the shower for a while or relax on your bed while listening to soothing music. Taking a mental health day can be a great way to give yourself a day of rest and care. 

Have A Chat With A Friend 

Sometimes, speaking with a friend is all we need to do to feel better in no time at all. See if you can give your friend a call or a facetime and catch up with them about various goings on. You don’t need to spend time talking about why you don’t feel 100% – you don’t even need to mention it if you don’t want to. Simply talking to your friend can have a big impact on your mood and help you to feel better regardless.

Writing in a journal isn’t just an activity for teenage girls. It’s actually a great way to get your feelings out on paper, take an objective view of what’s going on, and notice patterns in your behaviour. However, you may not learn anything right away. You may need to write in your journal for a while before you can look back and spot patterns in your behaviour or your thinking. There are many ways to journal, so there’s always going to be a way that suits you: bullet journaling, stream of consciousness journaling, and so on. 

Put On An Uplifting Playlist 

Uplifting music can make us feel good in no time, so put on your favorite playlist. We often listen to music while we do other things – we rarely just listen to music to listen to it anymore. See if you can put some time aside to listen to an old favorite that you know will help you to feel better. Bonus points if you can use a record player and record for that nostalgic feel. 

Let It All Out 

You don’t need to hold it together. Crying can be extremely healthy, so if you feel like it, then do it! Letting out your tears can be a great stress release, and can also help you to process your emotions and work through them. Holding it in does nothing to benefit us, so make sure you find a private place to cry if you know certain people in your life won’t be understanding. 

Do Something Nice For Someone Else 

You might be surprised to learn that doing something nice for someone else can actually make us happier than doing something nice for ourselves! What can you do for another person today? Perhaps you could give some money to a homeless person, pay it forward with a cup of coffee, or give a stranger a compliment. It doesn’t need to cost money to be a good person who tries to make other people feel good.

Try to limit your drinking, and drink alcohol free-alternatives instead, at least some of the time. If you find yourself turning to something harder than alcohol to cope, seek help from outpatient drug treatment centers

Over Eating

Comfort eating or snacking out of boredom?. You’re not alone. Whether you’re ordering more takeaways because you can’t face cooking every night or you’re eating more unhealthy snacks to cheer yourself up on tough days, this is a problem. Overeating can cause weight gain and other problems with your health and isn’t going to fuel your body properly. Instead, try to swap the junk food for healthier options, and try to limit the number of takeaways you order, and cook at home instead. 

Social Media

Social media is an easy distraction from the world right now, so if you’re bored at home, it’s likely you’re spending more time than ever scrolling through social media. We already know that heavy use of mobile devices isn’t ideal for our mental health, but that’s especially true at the moment. Constantly reading headlines about the pandemic can make you feel more stressed and anxious. Seeing people disregarding guidelines on your feeds can make you feel angry and resentful. 

If you feel anxious or angry, put your phone down and do something else instead, like reading, exercise, or a game. 

Not Exercising

If your local gym, pool, or class has had to close, it might be harder to find the motivation to exercise. As you spend more time not exercising, your energy levels will dip, making it even harder to find the motivation to work out. 

Exercise is excellent for mental health, so if you can, try to find an alternative to your usual workout routine if you’ve had to give it up. There are lots of fitness trainers and gyms that have pivoted to offer classes or personal training sessions virtually. You could try some of these or some of the many fitness videos available for free on YouTube. You can find everything from Pilates to Zumba online. Start running and take your exercise outdoors. Go for long walks around your neighborhood. Find something that helps you to keep active.
