Tango your way to Better Health!
Tango dancing and other social dances are a great way for people of all ages to stay in shape!
Its been one of the main topics of major medical news stations and channels, that social dancing has become a great way to replace the twenty minutes of brisk that doctors have been recommending for years. In addition to physical perks, there has been strong correlation found between social dancers and a reduction in mental diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Social dancing has the greatest reduction for these types of of mental diseases then of any other type of activity.
Not all Dances were created equal.
As you can tell by examining the amount of calories burnt per hour:
- * Ballroom/Tango: 180-480
* Belly dancing: 180-300
* Jive/swing dance: 250-400
* Line dancing: up to 300
* Salsa: 400
I can let you figure out the amount of calories you’ll burn in a week from dancing — but beyond the weight loss, dancing will improve your posture, and enhance parts of the legs and feet that regularly don’t get worked (people often find muscles in their feet that they didn’t know existed before). It will also improve the way your legs and buttocks look in your new summer fashions! And naturally, dancing is great for your metabolism and mental well being.
There is a reason why Jazz-ercise is so popular!
This is expected because dance is a physical exercise. With an improvement of physical exertion you will find yourself with enhanced endurance. Regular dancing is great for improving endurance, especially vigorous dancing (tango, for example). Most Americans consume about 300 calories more then needed in a day- an hour of dancing a day will easily burn off the extra calories.
Tango Dancing, at its base, is a social activity.
Studies have shown that strong social ties and socializing with friends contribute to high self-esteem and a positive outlook. Most major cities have a lot of activities involving dance occurring- I live in Portland Oregon and there is a Portland Tango event every single night. A simple google search will find you activities occurring in your own city. Tango being a social dance, it is seen as a way for people dealing with divorce and depression to connect to the outside world- helping them, get out of the rut there life was currently in. It does this by improving your social outlook by creating strong ties with the people you dance with and improving your feelings of self worth by fostering a community that desires you.

Karla, I never thought about tango dancing as being healthy but I am willing to try it. This is also my first time on your blog, great content and I look forward to coming back and reading more.
I absolutely love dancing! It’s not work at all; it’s pure pleasure! I always knew there were health benefits but I really enjoyed your post; you even have the calories figured out! I’ll have to get back out there with my husband and enjoy such a pleasurable activity again!
Best wishes in your online endeavors,
Deborah
