Eco-Friendly Laundry
I don’t know about you, but I like clean clothes so doing laundry is an ongoing necessity. So I am looking for ways to change it to be eco-friendly. Any small changes I make can make a big impact.
Air drying
If you have the room in your yard, hang up a line and air dry your clothes. I am a bit leary on this one as I really don’t want the world to see my underwear. But I could save about $70 and a ton of carbon each year by doing it. My Mom used to air dry my clothes when I was younger and I love the smell they have after being outside.
Water Usage
Wash in cold water instead of hot. I used to wash in hot all the time because I thought it got all the yuck out better but it really doesn’t. Did you know 90% of the energy for washing a load in hot water is used in just heating the water? So next time you go to do laundry think cold.
Laundry Detergent
Try reducing the amount of detergent you use per load. I have learned that I can use HALF the amount recommended and still get my clothes clean. It not only save you money by making it last longer but you are putting fewer suds in the waterways. You can also buy eco friendly laundry detergent or you can venture off and make your own.
Recycle
Make sure to recycle all empty bottles. What I have been doing in keeping some smaller bottles for craft projects. Have the kids make something out of them or use them as a planter. Cut off half the bottle, decorate it, put some soil in it, and plant an indoor plant. You can also use it as a watering can. Punch hold in the lid and off you go.
I am trying to become more eco friendly this year so I am trying to find small ways to change opposed to taking on everything at once. Bottom line is just try to make a change, any change. Let me know what you have done to change your laundry style.

I’ve been trying to make sure that I am only washing full loads and we’re saving up for a more energy efficient washer and dryer. You have some great ideas here, thanks for sharing!

I think you have hit the nail on the head with your ideas. I have the same issue about hanging my personals out for the world to see and I often wash in the evening so over night drying on a clothes line is not practical. Here is how I get around it. I bought me a couple of these really nice clothes drying racks. It is awesome. I get all the money and environmental savings. I can wash when it is convenient for me and I never have to air my personal laundry out for the neighbors to see. I have a family of four and I have not used my dryer now for 6 months.
