Do it Right: Fast Family Reunion Ideas
Many people avoid hosting or planning family reunions because they think it has to be expensive, elaborate, or complicated and time-consuming. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be any of these things. The point of a family is to get together with family, and to enjoy time together, not to earn a second bachelor’s in event planning. So if you’re looking for a few quick and fun ideas for a family-centered family reunion, here are a few you can start with.
Potluck Picnic in the Park
No need to cook ten courses and host a family reunion in an expensive hotel ballroom. Instead, have everyone bring a favorite dish and gather in the park. Parks are community space, so unless the park has a small fee for car entrance, it’s free to gather there. Since everyone is bringing a dish no one person has to do all the cooking, and there’s plenty of room for kids to play and people to mingle.
A Beach Bash
Live close to the beach, or within a reasonable driving distance of one? Have everyone gather there. If you want to make sure it is a private party, consider renting a beach venue at DB’s. You can use the same potluck idea, or you can delegate a few people to bring hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, etc., and have a make-your-own family style bonfire barbecue. Roast the meat over the campfire and bring a volleyball net and a couple of footballs along with water sport equipment and you’re set for a day of family fun, all for a low price.
Waffle Breakfast Feast
Whipping up some waffles and pancakes and setting out some berries and syrups for toppings isn’t that difficult to do, it’s not expensive, and it’s a great way to get the family together. If someone in the family has a large backyard, you can do this at someone’s home. Alternatively, you can use a community center or public land, you’ll just have to make the waffles at home and bring them with you. Either way it’s fast, affordable, and a great way to get everyone together. It is also a great morning activity that won’t last all day if you’re eager to get in and out.
Buffet Style Meals
If you have a smaller family, or someone who has a large home or cabin, you can gather for a buffet-style meal. If your family opts for an in-home gathering, don’t feel the need to spend hours over the stove. Instead, create a buffet, or bar-style system. Some good ideas are a taco bar, nachos bar, panini bar, and/or sundae or ice cream bar. Line up the toppings and let people grab their own. It’s simple and allows the focus to remain on the family.
These are just a few of the many great family reunion ideas for those who want a fast, easy-to-plan, and inexpensive reunion. Remember that the point of the reunion is to see family. As long as there’s food and enough space, you’re set to go.
