4 Lessons Every Child Needs To Learn
When it’s all said and done, there are certain skills a person needs in order to have a strong foundation and develop into a compassionate, well-rounded, and engaging individual that practices integrity on a daily basis. These traits should be instilled in children as early as possible. Some of these characteristics are more natural while some are actually learned. Kids need to learn the basics like healthy nutrition and good oral health care. But, the principles suggested here are more philosophical in nature and go way deeper into how to actually treat others.
The following suggests four key lessons that every child needs to learn to be the best adult they can possibly be.
Be Honest and Responsible
Honesty and responsibility go together like two peas in a pod. Children can’t be wholly responsible unless they’re being 100% honest with themselves. While questioning others makes them accountable, it’s equally important that they do the same for themselves. Kids need to learn to be held accountable for making their own decisions, accomplishments, and mistakes throughout their entire life. Show them the value of consequences. Teach them that if they don’t do simple things, such as taking care of their teeth, then they will be stuck with consequences, such as having to visit an Edmonton childrens dentist such as Westmount Dental Center.
Always Question Authority – Yes, Authority
While there’s definitely a right way and a wrong way to question authority, it’s one of the most valuable lessons a child can learn. In fact, it could literally save their life someday. Questioning someone in authority does not mean, however, being disrespectful. What it does mean is holding key experts and officials such as teachers, coaches, and doctors accountable for their words and actions. No matter who you are or how old you are, you deserve respect from everyone. So, children have the right to ask questions and demand answers just like anyone else, but in a respectful manner of course. This includes parents as well. The role of a parent is not to function as an absolute ruler, but as the people who love and guide their children to the absolute best they can be.
If You ‘Mess’ Up, It’s OK
Sadly, some children (especially teenagers) think that if they’re not perfect all the time or if they screw up in some way, it’s the end of the world and they don’t feel as worthy as a human being. What they need to know is that everyone screws up and the best thing you can do is learn from it, let it go, and move forward. Holding a grudge will only continue to defeat their self-worth in the end.
Respect and Kindness
Treating others with respect and kindness are absolutely essential in order to live a happy and productive life. The earlier children can learn this – the better. Indeed, they will encounter many jerks over the course of their lifetime. However, they need to understand that when someone’s being a jerk it’s because of what’s going on inside of that person, and not for the child to take it personally. It’s best to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
These four key principles should ideally be instilled in everyone, but especially young children.
