When to and What to Teach Your Teenagers about Proper Hygiene
Hygiene is a necessary part of life, but many teenagers tend to pretend that it doesn’t even exist. Having to chat with your youngsters about these issues can be a little bit uncomfortable, but following some simple suggestions can ease some of that tension.
When to Chat
You really shouldn’t wait until your children hit puberty to begin discussing hygiene. Hygiene includes brushing their teeth, washing their hands after going to the bathroom and so forth. Working these lessons into your daily lives from the time they are very small is necessary; however, when they do reach puberty, you will have to address other elements of hygiene.
Deodorant and Antiperspirant
Problems with sweating are often some of the first ones to manifest, so you should work to address these early. Explain the importance of applying these items more than once a day. If your child is having a major problem with sweating, you may wish to take him or her to a doctor for a prescription antiperspirant.
Shaving
Learning about shaving is something that both teenage boys and girls need to do. According to The Art of Shaving, when you first start to notice hair sprouting, you may want to bring the topic up to them. They might be hoping that you do since some youngsters are embarrassed to say it first. Explain how shaving provides a groomed experience, and it may also help with some perspiration issues.
Clothing
Some teenagers are perfectly happy wearing the same pair of sweatpants every day for a week. You definitely need to address this issue. Even if they do not smell from the clothes they are wearing, that could change in the future. Addressing the issue now instead of holding off until later will make for a more pleasant situation for everyone. You should start getting them into a habit of washing their own clothes. No need exists for you to wash the clothes of a teenager; he or she is old enough to accomplish this task alone.
Resources to Consult
At times, your teenagers might be embarrassed to ask you about questions. You should discuss doctors with whom they can speak about issues, and you can also find out if their schools have any resources available.
Ensuring that your children have good hygiene is very important. When you start to implement these skills into their lives early, you are likely to have happier and healthier kids later on down the road.
