Staying Healthy in the Big Apple or Anywhere

staying healthyNew York City is famously known as the city that never sleeps. It is the most populated city in the United States, home to over eight million residents. But with the hustle and bustle of the city, sometimes it’s difficult to find time to work out. Staying healthy is important. We have put together a few options that are fun, easy, and will help you stay at your healthiest in New York City.

Staying Healthy with Sports

Particularly if you’re looking for healthy things to do in Chelsea, head to Chelsea Piers located on the West Side of Manhattan in Chelsea. Commonly referred to as a playground for adults, Chelsea Piers is home to New York’s largest sports and entertainment center, spanning 28-acres. The complex provides families, students, and tourists alike with a plethora of activities to choose from.  It houses the largest gymnastics stadium in NYC, huge rock climbing walls, several indoor basketball courts, playing fields, batting cages, dance studios and two full sized ice skating rinks. For those who enjoy more leisurely activities, the complex also has a multi-story driving range and bowling center. After working up a sweat, Chelsea Piers also offers some good restaurants and bars where you can refuel, including the famous Pier 59, home to Manhattan’s only micro-brewery: the Chelsea Brewing Company.

Dance

If you’re looking for things to do in Williamsburg that include an underground dance experience that stays true to the New York melting pot theme, Bembe is the club for you. Located in the heart of Williamsburg, people from all over the city travel to Brooklyn for a night filled with steamy dancing, funky vibes, and booty shaking. The décor of the club is fresh and unlike anything else in NYC. Using recycles objects found around the city, the owners strive to create a space that connects people to their respected cultures. A glowing booth above the crowd brings a different DJ each night as he drives the crowd wild with a mixture of eclectic music, ranging from Latin inspired rhythms, Afro, House, Hip Hop, Reggae and even percussion beats.  Also, be sure to try their killer mojitos!

Bike/Jog

If you’re still looking for things to do in NYC, another way of staying healthy is by taking advantage of all the resources Central Park has to offer. With over 800-acres of land, including seven bodies of water and countless sprawling lawns, one will immediately forget that they are in the middle of the city. Take advantage of the park’s streets for biking, running, and rollerblading. Or, round up a group of friends and play some baseball, volleyball, or tennis on the park courts. Central Park also has a free public pool that doubles as a skating rink in the winter so that you can stay healthy all year round! There are even some recreational programs initiated by the park and other unaffiliated sport leagues. The best part: it’s free!

Shop/Cook

Eating healthy is equally as important as finding time to workout. So why not knock them both out while shopping at Chelsea Market, an enclosed urban food court, shopping mall, office building and television production facility.  Located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, it’s a hub of tons of cute boutiques and delicious food places. One can spend hours wandering the 22-building complex that fills two entire blocks. The market instantly becomes a food lovers’ paradise with vendors supplying cured meats, assortments of cheeses, chocolates, fresh veggies, and fruit. Also, with a surplus of different shops, locals can stock up on their grocery lists from stores like Dickson’s Farmstand and Manhattan Fruit Exchange, or buy new kitchenware at shops like Bowery Kitchen Supply. If shoppers become fatigued, they can take a quick break and stop in at one the many local bookstores, sit down with a cup of coffee and recharge!
