Spring Cleaning: Five Things You May Be Forgetting To Check
The spring is a great time to open up your windows and get rid of the hidden dust and dirt that accumulates throughout the year. While nature is busy renewing itself, homes get a little bit of extra attention too. You may be surprised to find a few things you’ve left off of your spring cleaning checklist. Here are five things you may be forgetting to check as you spruce up your home.
The Showerhead
As water passes through the tiny openings on your showerhead creating the lovely sprinkling of water you use to get clean every morning, small deposits of minerals are being left behind. Over time, these minerals build up and can create a partial blockage interrupting the flow and reducing water pressure. Simply removing the showerhead, placing it to soak in a bowl of vinegar overnight, and then rinsing it thoroughly with hot water will remove these deposits and leave your showerhead clean inside and out.
Bathroom Sink and Shower Drains
As you and your family shower and use the bathroom sink, hair gets washed down the drain. To prevent a serious clog, many drains are equipped with small hair traps that catch the hair as it runs down the pipe. Simply unscrew the drain stopper and pull it out carefully. There you will usually find a clump of hair that can be removed and placed in the trash. If you find you have a more serious clog, plumbers in Green Bay WI can help you restore full water flow.
Behind Toilets and Under Bolt Caps
Everyone knows to clean their toilet regularly, but that hard to reach area behind the toilet can get especially dirty over time. Be sure to clean this space as you’re mopping your bathroom floor. Using a little bit of bleach o hydrogen peroxide will help prevent the growth of mildew. Also, be sure to remove and clean beneath the bolt caps located on either side of your toilet. These can collect dust and dirt throughout the year.
Kitchen Drains
Thoroughly cleaning kitchen drains at least once a year can help prevent clogs and water backups. To thoroughly clean your kitchen drain, pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain followed by one cup of vinegar. Plug the drain if you can and wait 5 to 10 minutes. Then pour a pot full of hot water down the drain to rinse away and residue that may have built up over the last year.
Garbage Disposals
These do some dirty work and don’t get nearly enough attention. At least once a year, drop the peels from a lemon or orange into the disposal and turn it on for 30 seconds while you have the cool water running. The citrus oils in the peels will clean the blades and leave a fresh scent in your kitchen.
These cleaning rituals are easy to forget about, but now you can be sure to add them to your spring cleaning checklist. Once you’re finished, your home will sparkle like the new flowers and leaves freshly sprouted in nature. There’s no better feeling than a clean home.
