Savannah, GA- Must See Family Nature Attractions
If your family is anything like mine, you look for vacation destinations that will enable all of you to bond over nature. Savannah, Georgia is definitely an ideal location for nature lovers, and it is also filled with historical buildings to check out in between your other activities. The following list contains five of my favorite hot spots for nature lovers in the Savannah area, and it should provide you with a good starting point for planning a great vacation.
Many of these locations are easily accessed by public transportation, so you can choose one of the central hotels in Savannah Georgia, and then travel throughout the entire area without needing to increase your carbon footprint by utilizing a rental car.
Savannah National Wildlife Refuge
This refuge features over 29,000 acres, and it provides visitors with the perfect way to get away from the city and experience the beauty of nature. Whether you are interested in birds, alligators or manatees, you will be able to see them and take photographs from a safe distance. There are also several trails available for biking and hiking, and this makes the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge a great place to exercise while surrounded by nature.
Tybee Island Dolphin Tours
This was my favorite part of Savannah because I live in an area where dolphins cannot be found. However, there is a large dolphin population off of Tybee Island, and they will come right up to the boat. Thankfully, the tour operators enforce a strict no touching and no feeding policy to keep the dolphins healthy and safe while you enjoy their presence.
Kayaking and Canoeing
The Savannah coast provides adventurous families with several opportunities to spend time on the water. As an added bonus, if you decide to go kayaking, there is a good chance that you will have an encounter with at least one dolphin. There are several local businesses that rent kayaks and canoes, so you do not need to take any special equipment with you.
Tybee Island Beach Ecology Trips
Marine biologist Dr. Joe Richardson hosts these ecology trips, and they are the perfect way to ensure that your children receive a fun and educational experience during your vacation. During your ecology trip, you will have the opportunity to look for fossils and dolphins, and you will also learn about a wide variety of marine life through first hand interaction.
The Urban Forest Tour
Wilderness Southeast Tours has several options available for nature lovers. One of my favorites is the Urban Forest Tour because it enables you to get a good look at the city of Savannah without being in a vehicle. In fact, this walking tour will take you through many of the squares and parks with the purpose of learning about the trees that line Savannah’s streets.
As you can see, there are definitely a lot of options for the nature loving family. If an outdoor experience is what you’re looking for, then Savannah is the vacation spot for you.
