How To Look After A Hearing Aid

If you have hearing loss, you might be prescribed a hearing aid as one potential solution. Hearing aids are incredibly useful devices, and amazing technology which is only getting better year on year. If you do have one, however, you will need to make sure that you are looking after it properly, and that might be easier than you think, and simpler too. Let’s take a look at some of the main ways to look after a hearing aid that you might want to make sure you are aware of when you have one.

Keep Them Clean

This is the main thing you need to do, and it’s very simple as long as you follow a basic daily routine. First, ensure that you carry out a daily wipe down, using a soft, dry cloth or special hearing aid wipes. This removes earwax, sweat and dust, and is a really important part of starting to get your hearing aid much clearer. Make sure you avoid using any water or harsh  cleaners, as these are likely to damage the hearing aid. A simple wipe is all that is needed once a day.

Protect From Moisture

It’s really important that you are protecting your hearing aids from moisture at all times. They really can’t deal with moisture well, and you are going to find that you damage them quite easily if you do get them wet. Take them out before showering, swimming, or engaging in any other such activities. Even water-resistant models aren’t completely waterproof, so you need to take care regardless. You should ideally store them in a dry box or dehumidifier at night to help them stay completely dry.

Handle With Care

Whenever you handle your hearing aids, be sure to take care. You might be surprised just how easily you can damage them, and that damage can often be quite pronounced just from a simple touch or a drop. It’s best to hold them over a soft surface when inserting or removing them, so they don’t get damaged if they are dropped. And you should ideally keep them away from pets and children. If you need hearing aid repair, you can get that done professionally, but of course it’s best to avoid it becoming damaged in the first place, so take care with them.

Watch The Batteries

You do need to make sure that you are keeping an eye on the batteries over time too. With traditional batteries, you’ll have to change them when the sound quality drops or your device beeps a low-battery warning. Keep spare batteries on hand just in case you should need them. For rechargeable ones, ensure you charge them up every night, as that is going to help the battery to retain its health for longer. That’s a really simple way to ensure that your hearing aid lasts a lot longer overall.
