How To Help A Loved One Who’s In Pain

Watching someone you care about struggle with pain can leave you feeling totally helpless, and that’s the case whether it’s a physical pain or a mental health issue. The point is that knowing how to offer the right support can make all the difference, and that’s why it’s so important to know what to do – not only will you help your loved one feel better, but you’ll help yourself too. If you want to know more about how to help a loved one who’s in pain, keep reading for some helpful ideas.

Start By Listening

Sometimes the best thing you can do is just listen – you’ll often find that when someone’s in pain, they don’t feel as though anyone understands what they’re going through and that makes them feel depressed and isolated, so letting them talk about it all and being there to listen can really make a difference.

Even if you can’t help in any physical way, being there to listen and perhaps even using open-ended questions to get a conversation started is a good thing to do. Ask them how they’re feeling or what’s the hardest challenge or even just how you can help them, and it can mean so much.

Educate Yourself

If your loved one’s pain comes from a specific condition or injury, it’s a good idea to take the time you need to learn as much about it as you can. If you can do that, you’ll have a much better understanding of what they’re going through, and you’ll be in a better position to offer support and even advice if need be. Plus, even if there’s nothing you can do, the fact that you’re digging deeper shows you care, and that can be enough in some cases – it’s certainly a positive thing.

One thing you could learn more about is the natural side of medication and the remedies your loved one might be able to use to help that they’ve not explored yet. If you understand more about THC varieties, for example, and you get to know about their benefits and who can use them, you could help your loved one get some relief, and that’s just a start – there’s loads to learn, so the sooner you begin, the better.

Offer Practical Help

Pain can often make even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming, so although your loved one might desperately want to cook a meal for their kids or clean the house or just go to the shops, it might be impossible. That’s why you can help by offering to do some of these things for them – this kind of practical help can be the ideal way to show you care and do some good.

If your loved one is in physical pain, for example, you could offer to cook a meal, run some errands, or do some chores around the house. If it’s a mental problem, you can be there to talk or help with relaxation techniques like getting out in nature. The point is that even the smallest gesture like getting them a drink if they can’t do it or they’ve forgotten about it can make a really big and positive impact.
