Reduce The Stress: Five Tips To Help Moving With Kids A Breeze

5 Tips To Help Moving With Kids A BreezeMoving into a new home is considered to be one of the more stressful events that adults can go through, and moving is no picnic for kids either. Kids may be concerned about everything from how their belongings will get into their new room to losing friends from their current neighborhood. Their stress and concerns can make moving even more difficult on you. There are a number of steps that you can take that can ease the stress they are feeling and to help them through this transition.

Talk to Your Kids About the Transition

Depending on the age of your kids, it may be helpful to discuss the transition with them openly. Younger kids may feel stressed out and scared, so it may be best to delay this talk with them. Older kids, however, may feel better about the process if they are included in some of the plans or if they understand more fully what to expect.

Keep Some of Their Toys Out

Many people will begin packing up their belongings several weeks before the big moving day arrives. This can help you to spread out the workload over a period of time. However, when you pack up all of your children’s belongings, you inevitably will create some level of misery or boredom with them. Consider leaving the belongings, toys, electronics and other items that they use most often out of the moving boxes until the last minute.

Pack Their Room Last

When moving day arrives, you may pack up the kids’ rooms last. This will give your kids a place to stay while the movers trudge around the house and load up the truck. You can also unpack their room and help them to get settled in first. This will give them a feeling of security as you work on unpacking the rest of the boxes and setting up your new house.

Recruit Help on Moving Day

Older kids may be a big help on moving day, and they may actually find it rather adventurous to pack up a truck with you. However, moving day can be difficult for younger kids or kids who are more emotional. With the adults and older kids running around and moving heavy items, it can even be dangerous for younger kids to be underfoot. With this in mind, you may consider asking a neighbor or a family member to watch the kids while you move. It’s also important to get help from professional movers to speed up the process and pack your valuables safely, say the experts at Dyer M & Sons Inc.

Get the Kids Involved With the Effort

Moving is not a one-day process, and it can take several weeks to fully pack up a home and to get settled into a new home. Kids can help by cleaning out their rooms as a preliminary step, packing books and toys, folding linens into boxes and more. On moving day, kids may move lighter items, such as barstools or lamps. They may also be tasked with walking the pets around while the truck is being loaded.

Moving with kids can be stressful, but it does not have to be. If you are preparing to relocate to a new home, you can easily follow some of these tips to make the process easier on yourself and your children.

  1. Thanks for reminding me that my kids might feel stressed out and scared about the move so it is best to prepare them beforehand. We’ll be moving to a bigger house next month but I think it wouldn’t hurt to follow your advice and talk to them. I’ll try to see their reactions first before hiring professionals who offer residential moving services.
