Omega-3 And The Beautiful Minds

Everybody must have heard of the saying you are what you eat and everyone who heard that knows what it means. However, recently, some researchers are giving a brand new meaning into that statement. Before, we only believe that the type of food that we put in our plate, eat and digest only affects how we look and feel but as it turns out, these food actually have a determining effect on how a person thinks and reasons.

Boost Your Brains

Research shows that psychological, psychiatric, emotional and metal illnesses in the likes of bipolar disorder and depression may be because of dietary deficiencies and not because of one’s genetic make-up. People who are suffering from memory loss also tend to be moody and highly irritated, they also have difficulties in learning new activities. These people have something in common, they are all omega-3 deficient.

Omega-3, is not hard to find, it is often found in fish oil products like tuna, mackerel and salmon. the importance of omega-3 to the brain is simple, it has a fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid, or simply DHA. This is an important element that not only plays a significant role in brain development but in brain function as well. Through making cell membranes more fluid, omega-3 fatty acids in the likes of DHA creates an improvement in the communication between the brain cells. And according to Dr. Ray Sahelia, when there is insufficient amount of omega -3 in the body, it has a higher risk of causing a communication breakdown in the brain.

The Anatomy of Your Brain

A great percentage of the brain is comprised of good fats, these fats are called fatty acids and it can be found in omega-3. According to previous research, diets which are abundant in omega-3 enables people to have bigger chance of having higher learning abilities as well as sharper memory, problem solving skills and focus. It was also believed that better communication between the cells may also be a result, In addition, benefits of fish oil also cover emotional balance and positive mood, it may even help people maintain a healthy mental state even as they grow older.

Omega-3 helps the brain get the flexibility that it needs. See, there brains are filled with neurons and the membrane envelopes them. For the neurons to have effective communication, the membranes need to be flexible enough to accommodate molecules to pass through. However, certain factors like high cholesterol, age and saturated fats may cause the membrane to harden, making it challenging for the molecules to pass through. What omega-3 does is that it restores the flexibility of the membrane, thus making the whole cell communication process clear and smooth flowing again.

Experts perceive omega-3 fatty acids in a very important way. Some of them even believe that it was through omega-3 EFAs that the brain was able to develop, evolve and be what it is now. However, editors from FC&A Medical Publishing wrote in one of their books that while the brains need omega 3, it does not always receive it. The normal diet of a person today may contain a lot of omega-6 and oils from processed food but very little and insufficient amount of omega-3 oils.
