4 Careers That Are Great If You Like Helping People

If helping people is in your nature, why not embark on a career that helps you fulfill that? Even if you’re in a job already, there’s no reason why you can’t switch to a new career to do something that will benefit others. There are some fantastic careers out there that are about helping others in different ways, so take a look at four great recommendations below and consider starting a career that will help you make a difference in people’s lives.

1. Teaching

Teaching is a rewarding career that lets you work with all sorts of people to help them achieve their goals. There are many reasons to go into teaching, but if you like working with others, this could be a great career for you. Teaching doesn’t have to involve working with children; you could teach adult learners, those with learning difficulties and even college students – giving you a wide range of options to choose from depending on what your preferences are.

2. Nursing

Nurses are an essential part of medical care and nursing involves more direct patient contact than you might have as a doctor or other medical professional. Many people decide to go into nursing after experiencing the care and difference they make to patients first-hand, and it’s a career where helping others will always be the main objective. Being a nurse can be a tough area to work in, and you’ll need to be prepared for long days where you’re rushed off your feet, but as far as helping people goes – it’s a fantastic area to work in.

3. Counseling

Mental health issues affect more people than you might realize, people who need help and support to overcome their issues. Becoming a counselor is a great career for those who want to help others and can make an incredible difference to someone’s life. You could study for a masters in mental health counseling at any time, and could even go into counseling part-time if you want to continue in your existing career. Counselors are very valuable to those with mental health issues, and being someone who can listen and help is the perfect way to make a career out of helping others.

4. Charity work

Charity isn’t just about volunteering, most charities (particularly large ones) have a team of staff to carry out the work of the cause that will be funded through fundraising activities. If you have an existing specialism like PR or marketing, then there are charity roles you can take on without having to re-train or learn new skills. Working for nonprofit organizations provides a different dynamic and objectives to working in the private or public sector, allowing you to give back while using your existing skills and experience.

Seeking a career that helps others is a wonderful and positive thing that could make a lot of difference. Sometimes, going through an experience yourself – like mental health issues, can make you realize that you want to use your own experiences to help others and give them the same care and support that you might have had. There are many different ways you can help others as part of your career, so it’s worth exploring the available options to see if you could be making a difference through your work.
